Some news from elsewhere:

John D. Berry reviews one of my favourite type foundries, the Dutch Type Library.

Peter Bilak has just released Federa Serif, a serifed companion to his Federa Sans. A rather pleasing type with two versions with different ascender/descender lengths and contrasts.

This week Bitstream also released its long-awaited open source typeface, Vera. A type family with 10 fonts with sanserif, serifed and mono variants, it is available for free download here. The family of type has an enormous x-height, clearly designed for good legibility on screen, but the hinting doesn’t look finished to me. Some say they are using Vera as the default font for browsing, but I’m definitely not convinced it’s in any way better than Verdana. Vera sans is curiously similar to Verdana, though, but it does set better in print, with more refined features.
