Typophile Forums: If you could only use 5 typefaces...
Massimo Vignelli once said ‘a designer should only use these 5 typefaces: Bodoni, Helvetica, Times Roman, Century and Futura.’ If you could only use five typefaces for the rest of your designer career, what would you choose? And why? 2/07/2003 02:01:00 AM (0) comments Jean-François Porchez is invited to the next Typohile Luchbox which will be held at 12:30 pm PST tomorrow (Thursday). For those of you who don’t know what Typophile Luchboxes are, they are weekly chat sessions that are held at the Typohile site every Thursday. Transcripts of the past two sessions are here.2/06/2003 02:39:00 AM (0) comments A new issue of the Polish design magazine 2+3D is out now. This issue is mainly about design in Switzerland, with an article by yours truly (his first!). An English translation of which can be found here. I have yet to pursue the decipherable text in more details (most of the articles are just in Polish, with short English summaries), but as always, the magazine is visually handsome – a joy to look at. This time a soft uncoated stock is used for some of the pages, printed full colour – really beautiful.
2/05/2003 04:21:00 PM (0) comments Found this yesterday, from the US Department of Transport. These downloadable PDFs show you all the exact specifications of US road signs. The section on the stardard alphabets is particularly interesting and useful – it shows you all the variations of the Highway Gothic typeface and even the widths and spacing of each character! Tobias Frere-Jones probably used these specs for his extremely well done Interstate. I never realized how badly these fonts were drawn until I saw these PDFs... the outlines are pretty terrible! It would be great if the DoT could use Font Bureau’s Interstate instead...2/04/2003 04:35:00 AM (0) comments Powered by Blogger
