Here’s part of a book title ‘lettering’ for a Chinese comic book I’m currently working on. The top one was drawn in Illustrator, the bottom one was hand-drawn. While I don’t want to give the book title away, the book is about adventures, explorations, courage, friendship and the idea of travelling. The title lettering is supposed to convey these as well as the romanticism surrounding travelling by steamers and trains in the latter part of the 19th century. All this for a young readership. I’d say it might be quite difficult to achieve with Chinese characters! The top one is the one I prefer, as its simplicity and its graphical qualities which goes well with the Hong Kong style comics, but may be it doesn’t say much about the romanticism? The bottom one, however does have more feeling, and it looks as if it’s for a younger audience (softer). But is it too cliché? It might even be on the borderline of being a bit ‘cheesy’?!

TypeCon is coming in two days! Maybe I’ll even see some of you in Minneapolis? Come back soon for pictures and reports of the conference.
