Found this yesterday, from the US Department of Transport. These downloadable PDFs show you all the exact specifications of US road signs. The section on the stardard alphabets is particularly interesting and useful – it shows you all the variations of the Highway Gothic typeface and even the widths and spacing of each character! Tobias Frere-Jones probably used these specs for his extremely well done Interstate. I never realized how badly these fonts were drawn until I saw these PDFs... the outlines are pretty terrible! It would be great if the DoT could use Font Bureau’s Interstate instead...
